Thing 22 Staying Current

The first thing I am going to do is unsubscribe to some of my RSS feeds and re evaluate which ones are most beneficial. I way over did RSS. I really like the suggestions on the LibrarianInBlack.net site. That Powerpoint gave many good suggestions for keeping up without getting overwhelmed.

Thing 20 Book 2.0

I really like BooksVideo.tv.  I watched the demo on the book about Columbine HS.  That would be a neat thing to do with high school kids regarding the books they like.  Sort of like a movie trailer.  We talked about that,  but haven't done it yet.  Maybe that is a project we can get finished  before the end of the year and use BooksVideo.tv to show the kids the format.

Thing 19 Flixter &

I had never heard of Flixter or Film Crave.  They were both interesting.  I don't watch movies very often so I never had searched for a site like those.  I'll remember those if I am ever in the mood to watch a movie.  I liked the Top Movies of the Year option.

Thing 19 Classroom 2.0

The main classroom 2.0 ning is really good for my other job of instructional technology in the schools.  There is a lot of useful educational information on that site.

Thing 19 Nings Other Social Net

I am a member of numerous Nings and have created many.  Right now we have three regional Nings for the Florida Association for Media in Education that I have set up after FAME regional meetings around the state. We use a Ning internally for our school library media specialists and aides and it is a great way to share information.  I really like the Ning interface even more than Facebook.

Thing 18 Facebook

I love Facebook and have been a member since the fall.  Everyone in our office joined for professional and personal reasons.  I enjoy keeping up with my children that don't live at home. I also have enjoyed seeing old friends show up on Facebook every week.  I didn't realize there was an ALA group.  I joined the Library 2.0 group and did enjoy a video on their site called Reflections of Digital Scholarship and someone from West Florida created the video.  I don't like the recent changes in the interface of Facebook but from what I am reading it will probably change due to complaints.

Thing 17 Podcasts

I love podcasts and listen to them frequently. I subscribe to many that relate to personal interests but don't listen to too many professional library podcasts. I like the flexibility of podcasts, and I listen while I do my daily walk on my iPod. I use iTunes and iTunes University if I want to find more professional topics related to work. I have been involved with making podcasts on Audacity but never posted one. I might give it a try. I did listen to the Library Channel News for March 2009 and had never listened to it before.  It was very easy to search on "podcast.com" and I also had never used 'podcastalley.com.  I had never used those tools to find podcasts.  I did also listen to a David Warlick Connect Learning podcast from a conference in San Francisco.  I found his podcast using the Educational Podcast Directory.  I love iTunes the best just because the Apple Macintosh interface is so easy and intuitive.  You do get hits in a different way on the others that I liked also.

Thing 16: YouTube

Thing 15: Rollyo

I am skipping over this one tonight too, I want to do YouTube. See you soon.

Thing 14: Online Productivity Tools

I really am skipping over this Thing tonight. I want to do YouTube. I will return.

Thing 13 Library Thing

I really enjoyed exploring Library Thing. It was so easy to create my own library and interesting to see how many folks read some of the same books as me. My library is full of unusual titles related to Louisiana so I didn't expect to see so many people that had posted the same titles. Some of the titles are very old also from the early 20th century.

Thing 12 Wikis

I am not a fan of Wikis. I attended a summer training a few summers ago where our group project was completed on a Wiki. One person monopolized the entire project and would change what we posted on the wiki. I do like Wikipedia for some things I am looking for. Sometimes it is actually faster to find very current info on Wikipedia however, the problem of course is the info hasn't been peer reviewed. I have used PB Wiki in the past.

Thing 11 Social Media Mixx

I really like Mixx. I had never heard about it. I like the fact that what makes it to the top are what the users like instead of what a "faceless" editor as they said decides. I was especially interested in Mixx because one of the posted articles was "100 Terrific Web Tools for Tightwads". I am quite skilled at being a tightwad but I had never heard of most of the web tools listed on that page.

Thing 10

I love Delicious and will continue to use it. I plan on uploading my daily bookmarks to my blog. Delicious is a great way for us to share school library links with all the library media specialists in our district. It is a great research tool when several of us are researching the same topics. Then we can share what we each are learning. I have tried another social bookmarking tool called Porta Portal. I actually prefer Delicious more than that tool. Porta Portal is actually a good teacher tool and can download to the teacher webpages.

Thing 8 - IM

I use the IM in Facebook quite a bit.  I didn't know it was there for awhile until one of my friends started to chat.  I can especially see how the younger generation would love access to a reference librarian on the spot with IM.  I also use the IM feature in our First Class email system occasionally.

Thing 7 BigHugeLabs

So far I have linked my Flickr account to BigHugeLabs and made a photo cube.  Just haven't printed it out yet.

Thing 6 MashUps SplashR

Wow that was easy and very cool.  I thought it would find lots of folks photos of the same place,  but when I did it,  it only showed mine but it was a neat format for viewing photos.

Adding to Map in Flickr

I did figure out how to map my photos in Flickr.   I only did two.  One in Colorado Springs and one in Trinidad, Colorado.

Thing 5 Flickr Linking to Blog

I can't seem to figure out how to link my FlickR page to my blog.  I tried but it didn't take me where I thought it would go.

Thing 5: Flickr

I had searched Flickr quite a bit in the past. However, this is the first time I have created an account and posted some of my own photographs.  I tagged all of my photos to 23Things@NEFLIN.  Hope you all can see them.  I was at ALA Mid Winter last week and took some photos of a few places in Colorado that I visited.

Thing 4

I really do like the fact that I only get the text first on my RSS feeds that I subscribe to.  My first mistake with Google Reader RSS feeds were that I subscribed to too many.  I am inundated with more than I can read.  I haven't figured out how to unsubscribe yet.   I will work on it this week. Google Reader is very easy to use except I can't find out how to unsubscribe.

Thing 3 Blog Searches

I did a search on Technorati and on Blogsearch.google.com.  I got many more hits on Blogsearch than I did on Technorati.

Web 2.0

I am completing most of the web 2.0 tasks in the evening. I have already begun to use some Web 2.0 tools like social networks, social bookmarking, and RSS feeds. I don't want to be left behind in this information world and I want to understand the world my own children live in. My daughter IMs frequently and the first thing she does when she gets home is get on her Facebook page. I iChat videoconference with my son who is away in college in West Palm Beach several times a week. I hope to learn how to not just participate with Web 2.0 tools but begin to build my own tools. For example, I have been reading and commenting on blogs for quite a long time but until yesterday I had never completed my own blog.

Monday, January 12, 2009

I have visited way more states then countries.  One day I hope to visit all 50 states.  I have made it to 38 states, only twelve to go.
When I read the 43 links I found the Visited Countries and decided to explore.  I haven't been to too many,  only the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Jamaica.  It is a fun site to visit.  It would be a fun thing to do with students from a character in a book.

Looking forward to this class

I am looking forward to this class, because I wouldn't take the time to go through all of these Web 2.0 tools if I wasn't taking this online course.
